Shoo-Fly Cake - Cake Slice Bakers 18.

This is the new book for The Cake Slice Bakers.  We will be baking from this book for the next twelve months.  Doesn't it look pretty?  I have high hopes...

Our first bake from the book was the Shoo-Fly Cake.  This is a treacle cake with a crumb topping apparently named after Shoo-Fly pie which had a sticky topping which would attract the flies as it cooled.

I was rather underwhelmed with this cake, unfortunately.  Firstly, I made it for Dad's birthday and it just looked plain ugly so that was disappointing.  Secondly, the flavour was okay but nothing very exciting and it doesn't have the lovely stickiness I would expect from a dense treacle cake.

I won't be making it again.
Onwards and upwards - I'm hoping the next bake from the book will be an improvement.

If you want to see some other opinions of this cake - have a look at The Cake Slice Blogroll.

  2. Love the cover of the book. It's a shame the first recipe wasn't so great, but I'll look forward to seeing what happens next!

  3. What a shame, that's a different "vintage cakes" from the one I reviewed, must be a bit of a theme at the moment.

    1. Yes, I did look to see if you had the same book. Vintage anything is a theme isn't it?

  7. I have to agree with you - it's not the prettiest is it? And like you, I was disappointed and kept rewriting my words to ensure that I wasn't too negative in my post! It's my first bake with you guys, didn't want to upset Paloma! As you say, onwards and upwards!

  8. I have high hopes for this book, too. I liked the cake, but I like those spicy dark flavors. Hopefully you'll like next month's better!

  9. It's heartwarming to know that you did manage to bake the cake and go through with this although it may not seem like your favourite cake just like me :):)

Our next bake will definitely be better!! I'm looking forward to it and hope you are too ;)

  10. Your cake looks lovely but I agree with you that it wasn't as sticky as I'd hoped. If we don't try we don't know though!

  14. Aww I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the cake. I'm glad you tried it anyways. And you're right, I don't think it's really an ideal birthday cake. Hopefully you'll like next months cake better :)

  15. Ahh it's a shame you didn't like the cake. I added extra ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg to boost the flavour. I agree that it's not a birthday cake, but there are plenty of other birthday recipes in this book. Charlene, fellow TCS member x

  16. It's always disappointing when bakes don't match expectations. I like the look of the crumb topping though.

  17. Awww! Too bad this didn't work for you :(
The cake really doesn't look bad to me, you should of tried it the next morning, I think the flavors were better :)

  18. I can't disagree with you about the cake as I wasn't a fan either. I am glad that I tried it but not being a big fan of molasses did not help the cause.
